Meet the Team

We have a unique team of watersport experts and enthusiasts with proven experience in training and teaching. Our mission is to keep you safe on the water, teach you how to become a better sailor, windsurfer, stand up paddle boarder or powerboat driver.

Most of all, though we aim to have as much fun as possible on the water!

Craig Weeks

Chief Instructor

Craig is an ultimate all round sportsman! He learnt to windsurf on a small lake in East Sussex and has been hooked ever since! He became an instructor in windsurfing and sailing the following year and has continued to develop ever since. He has spent the last 5 years working in a number of centers across Greece, Turkey and Australia and is now enjoying exploring the seas closer to home, as well as getting more use out of his winter wetsuit! Always keen to learn he is also a highly qualified paddle boarding and power boat instructor. Teaching has become a real passion for Craig and he loves to see people get out on the water and learn new skills. Through the winter you'll find him shredding the park on his snowboard!

Simon McEvoy

Senior Instructor

An avid sailor, Simon has been an instructor for over 10 years, has completed a number of single-handed sailing challenges and has his own wayfarer. He believes deeply in the joy of sailing and enjoys passing on his knowledge and experience to others so they too can discover the fun of sailing. He has sailed a variety of dinghies & yachts, and has sound experience of dinghy day sailing and racing. He and his wife moved to Cornwall in December 2016 to be near to their Grandchildren, she is also a sailing instructor as were both of their sons. They all started sailing in 1990 and Simon became an instructor in 1996. He has taught sailing and powerboating in various locations around the UK and was the Training Officer for the UK Wayfarer Association for 3 years.

Sophie Reid

Sophie fell in love with windsurfing after watching a windsurfer at Polkerris Beach many years ago, and was hooked after her first taster session. After joining her university windsurfing society, she spent as much time as she could windsurfing and developing her skills. Since then, Sophie has also taken up paddleboarding and sailing. Her love of being outdoors and on the water encouraged her to become an instructor. She completed her instructor training at UKSA, on the Isle of Wight, and spent the summer working there, gaining a wide range of experience. She loves inspiring newcomers to get out on the water.

Jowan Sleep

Having lived a stone's throw away from Polkerris his whole life, Jowan grew up in and around the water. He’s also currently, the longest serving member of the Polkerris team having started in the beach hut aged 12. Throughout Jowan’s childhood he windsurfed as much as he could, competing at both regional and national competitions for both race and wave sailing; during this time he had world class coaching from professional windsurfers George Shillito, Adam Lewis and Ric Cleworth. His passion for being outdoors and the water drove him to become a Windsurfing and SUP instructor. When’s he’s not teaching you’ll find him surfing all over Cornwall as well as scooping the odd ice cream and selling a couple of wetsuits here and there!

Poppy Burns

Poppy is the ultimate Polkerris local! She has hundreds of hours experience on the waters of St. Austell Bay; sailing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and exploring. She knows Polkerris like the back of her hand. She has been sailing since she was 7 years old and discovered paddle boarding when she was 11, and hasn’t looked back! At only 16, she became a BSUPA paddle board instructor, RYA assistant sailing instructor and powerboat driver. Poppy is now a Dinghy Instructor and runs our Sunday Sailors clubs. Being one of Polkerris’ longest standing crew members, not only is Poppy a fantastic at teaching Sailing, she can also make a mean hot chocolate! If she’s not at work, you’ll find her paddle boarding in the bay, surfing over at Fistral or taking her pico for a spin; it’s safe to say she is a watersports enthusiast!

Josh Walters

Josh started sailing at Polkerris in 2012, which sparked his enthusiasm for being out on the water and made him keen to work in the world of watersports. Since learning to sail at Polkerris, he has also taken up windsurfing and paddleboarding. Josh recieved a Distinction on his Watersports Instruction Diploma at Falmouth. Since completing his course, Josh has gained many qualifications, including his Powerboat Level 2, Intermediate Windsurf Instructor and Dinghy Instructor. Josh enjoys giving people who don't often get a chance to get out on the water an opportunity to learn something new, and particularly likes working with young people and school groups.
